Ketamine has been making headlines for its revolutionary effects on depression. More and more studies are discovering that in addition to depression, ketamine is offering a long-needed solution to individuals who struggle with various anxiety disorders.
Scientists from the University of California conducted a study where 14 subjects receiving hospice care were given daily doses of ketamine over 28 days. Over the 28-day trial, there was significant improvement in symptoms. 100% of subjects completing the trial responded to ketamine. A significant response occurred by day 3. These improvements remained significant through day 28.
A 2013 experiment by Murrough JW et al. demonstrated that patients who were given ketamine responded 2x more than people who received Midazolam, a drug that produces an effect comparable to alcohol. Not only was the effect greater in patients who were treated with ketamine, but the effect was reported to last over a week after just a single infusion.
The University of Otago in New Zealand studied the effects of ketamine on 12 adults with general anxiety or social anxiety disorder. These adults received 3 ascending ketamine doses (0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg/kg) once per week. The doses of ketamine produced rapid anti-anxiety effects, which lasted for 3 to 7 days at higher doses. The drug was reported to be well tolerated.
How Does it Work?
When used in responsible and gradual dosages, ketamine acts as a neural growth stimulator. It increases the connections between synapses and boosts the mind’s functional capacity. Unlike other treatments, this increases serotonin in a natural and sustainable way. Therefore, patients experience anti-anxiety effects long after the ketamine is out of their systems.
